In-depth Digital Study Group
IN DEPTH DIGITAL STUDY GROUP
A 3-month professional learning journey designed for those with previous knowledge of the Reggio Emilia Approach and wish to gain deeper insight into the important theme of constructing curriculum in everyday life.
The course is divided into 3 threads with 15 hours of live meetings with Reggio Emilia teachers and pedagogistas and large quantities of study material available in participants' Reserved Areas.
Study material for the thread 1 will be available from 23 December so that participants have time to prepare for the live meetings on 27 and 28 January.
Enrolments are open until 25 January or until the course is fully booked!
In this year of celebrating the 50th anniversary of Reggio Emilia's first municipal infant-toddler centre and the introduction of Law 1044, national legislation that established 0/3 early childhood services in Italy, we are offering a deeper way of valuing continuity in curriculum constructed in daily life from infant-toddler centre, to preschool, and up to primary school.
From birth children interweave relations and languages, exploring the world with all their senses.
Everyday contexts prepared for giving potential to children's research are privileged places for teachers to explore the complexity of learning processes through the 100 languages.

HOW THE DIGITAL STUDY GROUP IS STRUCTURED
THREAD 1
THE RIGHT TO PARTICIPATIONChildren and adults contribute to the construction of the community's culture
Thread 1 will examine:
What are the political, social and cultural conditions that can make it possible today for educational services to be offered as intermediaries between individuals and society, constructing a concrete possibility of increased cultural and human capital in the community?
In our system, even though we know how much children represent a central strength, we are always of the conviction there is a relativity, an incompleteness, which can be better faced with a second and third centrality made up of teachers and of families. Therefore a triad of centralities is our premise. Loris Malaguzzi, 1984
Study material available from 23 December 2021
Live conversations: 27 and 28 January 2022, 1 - 3 pm (Italian time)

THREAD 2
THE RIGHT TO WONDERChildren's learning processes
The nature of knowledge and how the mind functions are of great interest to current debate, with the contribution of discoveries in the neurosciences confirming a complex and integrated vision of human beings and of learning. Loris Malaguzzi had already intuited this and expressed it in his theory of the 100 languages, which “recognise the liberty and legitimacy of each subject [individual] to learn with their differences through multiple entry points to the world and to knowledge”.
From this perspective the relation between theory and practice has always been a permanent subject of study in children's learning processes.
Thread 2 will examine:
How can the 100 languages be listened to and amplified to the end of characterising and multiplying the possibilities of human beings' knowledge and their competencies in doing and thinking?
(…) the human species has the privilege of manifest itself through a plurality of languages (as well as the spoken language) (…) all expressive, cognitive, and communicative languages form each other reciprocally, are born and develop through experience (…) all languages, which co-exist already in children’s minds and activities, have the power to become generative forces of other languages, other actions, other logics, and other creative potentials (…). and need to live with equal dignity and value, in a full solidarity with adequate cultural competency in adults and the environment (…) we ask (…) what support or confirmation can the current culture of childhood give to these propositions (…)?Loris Malaguzzi, 1983

THREAD 3
THE RIGHT TO BEAUTYEthics and aesthetics in knowledge processes
Thread 3 will examine:
To what extent would knowledge processes be changed if aesthetic vibration were considered an important activator of learning of the individual, and of groups of children and adults?
“… Aesthetics is a difficult uncongenial word not easily found in a pedagogical vocabulary but which needs instead to be understood in terms of the style in which the act of knowing and understanding proceeds…” Loris Malaguzzi
